Democracy workstream

Overview of the Democracy workstream

Democracy requires a robust electoral system, curbs on vested interests controlling the public sphere, and a strong media that can investigate the powerful. This research workstream evaluates the health of democracy and advocates for necessary reforms.

Outputs scheduled:

  • An annual report will be published investigating the last year in media performance, evaluating the extent to which journalists and broadcasters helped or hindered vested interests in New Zealand.

  • A triennial report on the state of local council democracy

  • An anti-SLAPP campaign (SLAPP stands for strategic lawsuits against public participation)
