Great piece. Very informative for someone like me, who came to NZ and found a place that presented itself as having no politics, except decency or NZ First

So in summary,

The Left looked pretty good 50 years ago to a drunken youth, but what happen? You sobered up, grew up and got a job (well you're a journalist and political commentator which is somewhat similar to getting a real job).

For further relevant information consider, Dunedin to Wellington 800km, Dunedin to Canberra 2145km, Dunedin to Washington 14600km, D.C. Dunedin to Beijing 10,961km, Dunedin to Moscow 16,621km. Your dreams from half a century ago and half an inch from the edge of the Earth are about that far away from actually constructing a building, making a machine, curing an illness or even cooking dinner. The reason why The Left failed is because The Left actually failed.

Oh the evocation of a time and place! You left out one category of The Cook habitues: the art school staff and students, of which I was one of the former in the 70s. Well I remember Hone Tuwhare, and at times, I think, Ralph Hotere. There was also a third "student pub", the Bowling green aka the Bowler, but apart from dental students I'm not sure of its demographic. Thanks for the memory blast, Chris.
